Back in 2014 the Kenmare Chronicle started accumulating information regarding Kenmare’s links with the Great War or World War 1 as it was to become known. With this information we started a register of people with roots in Kenmare who served in the War. This register grew to over 70, the men who enlisted from Kenmare came from all walks of life. They came from rural farming backgrounds as well as professional, merchants, craftsmen and labourers. There was no enforced conscription in Ireland so these men were all volunteers. This publication commemorates these people and shares their stories so they are preserved for future generations.
